Barbara's Ribbon, and the Fantastic Scanner
Two things… I have been failing to get around to mailing my friend Barbara her bookmark. And, we got a fabulous new scanner at work. So, I took the ribbon in, and did some scanning, and then PUT IT IN THE MAIL.
A closeup. This is a textile a little over half an inch in width. In these scans, it looks like a rug!
Those thick, jute-like hairy yarns? That’s Gutermann 100/3 sewing silk.
Close-up of the dragon. It’s more bronze-y than how this picture shows up, and the scanner totally kills the sheen. The dragon is brocaded in Kreinik Soie Platte (flat silk) and is very shiny.
The dragon in *too* much detail – every tiny hair shows up.
These are full-size (i.e., huge) versions, mostly for my reference:
https://www.wormspit.com/images/Ribbons/barbararibbon1.jpg (8.8MB) – the full original scan
https://www.wormspit.com/images/Ribbons/barbararibbon2.jpg (755K) – the large version of the first close-up
Your work is always just… amazing. 🙂
OMG
gorgeous as usual….how’s the embroidery project coming…They’re What ?peonies or ????
Re: OMG
The peony is crawling along – I’ve actually found somebody to take lessons from, and that’s been very helpful, but it’s just slow work. I need to dye some darker greens for the leaves; the ones I have aren’t dark enough for the shadow parts.
Being a structure geek, I actually enjoy the really detailed scans. This one’s a beauty!
Wow!
Seconded!
Fantastic!
LOVE the dragon!
Lovely work
Lovely bookmark Michael, hows the stitching going?
Have nominated your blog for a ‘Make my Day’ award.

Re: Lovely work
Jane,
The stitching is crawling along; I have found a teacher who studied in Souzhou, and I’m learning a LOT – but right now, it’s making me be methodical and careful. Hopefully will finish the peony within a week or so.
Thanks for the nomination!
Michael
Seconded! 🙂
Too much detail
Beautiful, I love the dragon.
I know what you mean about “too much detail”. My new camera has a good macro fascility on it but everything shows, warts and all. I can see clearly what is wrong with my stitching, when by eye, I thought that it was ok. Perhaps we will get used to the macro format and tune out the stray fibres that are not visible to the naked eye.
I hope you are enjoying your embroidery lessons and look forward to seeing an update on your peonies.

That’s just gorgeous! You do nice work. I don’t think the close up scans are overkill at all. I guess it’s really a matter of perspective — For those of us who want to know how it’s made, they’re awesome and for admiring the general beauty, a little farther back view is nice. It doesn’t make the piece any less wonderful.
