Where I stand on the Science-versus-Jesus culture wars
I don’t often get into political or cultural issues in my blog – it’s yarn, and bugs, and the yard, and snippets of my life… pretty easy stuff. This post is a little angrier than most, because it hits a nerve with me. I’ve lived in Texas since I was five, and sometimes it’s an embarrassment to be associated with the “average Texans” and their backward, gullible thinking.
I firmly believe in modern science. I don’t believe in the Bible. I’m not a Christian. It’s rarely an issue, but the other day while I was doing a school program, a teacher kind of pulled me to one side after I was done and waiting for the next group, and told me what marvelous creations silkworms are, and how she and I know, but we’re not allowed to teach the kids about God making them any more, they have to teach all this evolution nonsense in science… it just about turned my stomach.
And now, there’s this. SERIOUSLY, Texas? According to a poll by the University of Texas, thirty percent of Texans believe that humans and dinosaurs walked the earth at the same time. Because, you know, the Earth is only six thousand some years old. Fifty-one percent of Texans surveyed disagree that humans evolved from earlier species. Young-earth creationists make my skin crawl. I think that teaching this BS to your kids is child abuse.
Um, Google Reader is still doing it. Here’s the title and first paragraph:

Susan,
Unfortunately, the problem is now in the Google and Yahoo caches. Google hasn’t replied to my email, but Yahoo did, just saying that it would take three to four weeks for the cache to be replaced. My reading indicates that Google is similar.
I’ve sent reports to both of them, but the only way to go beyond that, is to remove the URL’s from their search for 90 days, and even then I’m not sure it would get the RSS to look clean through Google or Yahoo. I’ve re-synched my blog feed through FeedBurner, but it didn’t clear up. My hosting company confirms that the site is clean, the RSS itself is clean, and the DNS is working properly… if you type in the URL (i.e., go directly to the blog), it’s fine, it’s just the Google link.
Now, why it didn’t take three or four weeks for it to get messed up in the first place, they don’t say… the blog was only hacked for two or three days.
And yet they have no problem going to the doctor, or benefiting from the myriad other advances from evolution-based science.
Argh.
I totally agree. I grew up in Texas and now live in NY but go back a lot. Every Starbucks I go in has someone reading the Bible and in Barnes & Nobel they’re arguing about Jesus. And this is a big city.
