Spring flowers
The red roses are blooming.
This old-fashioned rambler was given to me by a friend many years ago, and has become a huge sprawling beast. It was originally the root stock of some grafted rose which had died; it came back from the root, so my friend gave it a chance. Chris loves it, and threads its canes through the trellis instead of pruning it. Right now, it has probably two hundred flowers or so.
It will have more than twice that in a few days. This rose only blooms once a year, in the spring, but when it blooms, it doesn’t mess around.
I love roses where you can see the middles. They have a mild scent, clearly rosey, but not overpowering. I sometimes pick and dry them for teas.
This isn’t from our garden; I bought Chris some stargazer lilies because they’re his favorite. I want to use this shot for an embroidery study. We’ll see if I have the stamina to render the drawing, dye all the silk, and stitch it.
This photo isn’t from this year; it’s from 2004. The Banksia rose is about a time and a half this size now – the canes drape on the ground for about two feet, which is beautiful, although a challenge to mow under. It was really stunning for a few days, but then a rain knocked off most of the blooms.
A medium focus.
Close up.
Wow! Those are really beautiful! I needed that. Our daffodils aren’t even out of the ground more than an inch yet. Getting more snow. Did I mention that I hate Ohio?
The lily shot is stunning on the black background.

ditto on the hating Ohio part. We just got rain and even a couple minutes of flakes today. I’m ready for some weather that resembles what Texas has.

*growls at your nice Texas weather*
I’m in upstate New York.
I drove to work in the sleet and snow this morning.

Oh – is THAT a stargazer lily? I had no idea what those critters were but I was tickled when this one appeared in our yard. 🙂

*laughs* Last Tuesday (or was it Wednesday?) it was 84 degrees in Dallas. On Saturday it snowed (lightly but still) for the first time in April in 70 years. It makes gardening fun!
And I love your roses! Many years ago a tragic accident befell the roses in my parents yard and I’ve been trying to add them back in in bits and peices (LOVE North Haven Gardens btw). This was the first year I really aggressive pruned our climber and I have to say I was amazed. Its like every bit I cut off grew another 4 canes and each one has a cluster of buds. Luckily only 1 of the bud blossomed before the freeze. I hope some day they’ll be as bountiful as yours. 🙂

WOW! That is wild! It really is a small world. Especially meeting you here in Mr. OakenKing’s journal. He doesn’t really know me yet- he just lets me gawk at his cool life. He is so friendly and interesting.
I went only my senior year at Perry, as we had just moved here from S.C. But I loved my time there! I had younger siblings but they moved again and were still older than you. Actually you are my youngest son’s age. He went to Massillon, 2002 grad. I have this sneaky feeling we may know some of the same people. I’m a nurse, worked in front of Aultman and see you speaking of clients and meds, so…..
(sorry I’ve hijacked your journal, OakenKing!)

Oh, that’s lovely. Thank you for the hit of spring; we have snow this morning and to see the flowers is just what I needed.
