spinningfiber community implodes… moving to handspinning
Howdy! Anybody on my Friends List who was previously reading spinningfiber – it’s gone. I have only a vague understanding of what prompted it; the community’s founder removed the other maintainers, and then deleted the community.
If you’re looking for your hand-spun fix, handspinning is doing its best to take up the slack – the moderation team is in place there, and we’re trying to get the word out.
And here, for your viewing pleasure: this is one of my entries in the Juried Show that’s going up on April 10 – a set of five skeins of tram embroidery silk, shades of emerald green.
I’m rather upset about it, it was an excellent resource. Nobody seems to know what set the Redhead off either. Then again, I gave money for the ribbons for the spinning contest a few years back and there never was a contest and I never got my money back either. I never complained.
ahh.. LJ drama. And I thought the old Crochet group was intense!
I never kept up with the dramas, but will be sad to see all the memories & resources gone. Ahhh. LJ– we know drama. 🙁
How utterly lovely….I am in awe of the workmanship; fumble fingered me couldn’t even sew that lovely stuff, much less spin it!
*BLINK* literally… I don’t read it for two days and what happens??
So what did happen? I do kinda know the old mods – life get in the way again or did a flame war occur?
Anyway – those colors are really really pretty! I hope you do well, I’m sure you will!
If you look at and scroll down to ‘s post, she explains most of what we know. As to WHY chose that particular path, nobody knows.
Lovely silks. Thanks for the heads up.
I’m not suprised that spinningber is gone. I somehow ticked off the redhead some years ago and was banned from the group. I think it might have had something to do with trying to sell something. Apparently there is no second chance, heck not even a first one!
Handspinning is a very quiet group. I’d welcome more people posting their ideas and such.
Me? Not so much spinning related, but dyeing related: I purchased a cone of laceweight and am parting it out into 1200 yard skeins and dyeing them colors. I’ve learned that dyeing black is really, really, really difficult.
My experience with black: use about twice the amount you’d normally want, and don’t expect it to exhaust – (I found that once on one of the sites… Dharma, or ProChem, or something…) and it makes it really good, inky solid black – but you have to WASH the devil out of it or it will bleed like crazy. Which I found out AFTER I made black and white ribbons – so that the black had all this lovely white to bleed onto. Fun!
mmmm, delicious! 🙂
Friending
May I friend you? I’m an ag student with rough hands and not enough time for fiber arts, but I’d love to watch your projects. When I have time to sew and embroider lately, the threads keep catching on whatever band-aid is covering whatever cut I got in the garden…
Re: Friending
Sure thing! I’ll add you back… I don’t post MUCH that’s under a cut, usually my dreamwork stuff.
I’ll be re-trying the dye process tomorrow and I think this time (if it works out) I’ll post the results. I’ll cross my fingers.
On a different note: I do have to thank you for many hours spent at work surfing through wormspit.com. A few years ago, I had this soul-sucking, horrible job with a hag as a boss. If it weren’t for the great stories of silkworm rearing, silk reeling and wonderful eye candy…I would have strung myself from the ceiling of my cubical with my telephone headset!
So, in short…thanks!
You’re certainly welcome! It’s been a sanity-saver for me, too – watching them grow, seeing all the pretty colors – and sharing it with all my online friend.
First off nice silks. Secndly um thanks about the community, I swear I was in there a week or two ago, it was great amount of resources very sad. But since rav. I haven’t been on lj except my own blog. I prob won’t see you at SM this year ( Shhh don’t tell any one I might be going to Peru on an internship) uber quiet, Ill et you know if I get it. hope the juried show goes well, they can be fickle 🙂

Re: Wow!
Thanks! I’m using this for both embroidery and brocade – embroidery in particular I need subtle ranges of shade.
This is the first embroidered project with this particular configuration of the silk: https://www.wormspit.com/images/embroidery/peonyfinished.jpg
And this is the brocade, same stuff: https://www.wormspit.com/images/Ribbons/gefferibbon13.jpg
Thanks for the links to the Handspinner community. I knew Spinning Fiber was getting rocky with the moderators, but I didn’t think it would go as far as to delete the community. Sad to see such good resources go away.
It wasn’t the moderators – it was The Redhead. I’m sad to see it go, as well.
