Silk organzine sizes
This is really not of much interest to anybody but me and a couple of friends.
These are some silk organzines that I got samples of yesterday.
All of these are tightly-twisted 3-ply organzines.
This is the 600 denier. This one is a very pale green.
This is the 1000 denier.
This is the 1900 denier.
All three together.
This is the 600 denier (green) with a strand of (white) 2/60’s spun silk from Robin and Russ.
Also 600 denier and 2/60’s spun silk.
1000 denier, 2/30’s spun silk (blue) and 1900 denier silk, left to right. Note how strong the twist is.
This is the 600 denier compared to Alfred’s Tasar organzine.
I wish I had time to get some more card weaving in… I used to do quite a bit! That looks perfect for it (and I know you often use it for that) I HAVE been able to do some embroidery lately though *GRIN* A wonderful lady friend of mine needed 4 “elemental” skirts for rituals and the Earth one has wound up with shisha mirrors, machine embroidery, and a bunch of my hand embroidery on it… I’d really missed doing it. Is that the sort of thing you’ll be using this wonderful stuff for?
Cool embroidery project!
These will be used for tablet weaving, mostly – they’re actually sold mostly as embroidery threads (on little cards) – but the pricing is reasonable enough to get it for weaving.
A friend of mine wants to consider using them for broad loom weaving, so that’s part of why I posted the photos. He was trying to get a good idea of what the denier weights are in terms of real thread.
Ooooh yummmy!
Where did you get it and is it reasonably priced for tablet weaving?
I got it from a company called Sea Line in China. It’s $80 per kilo, which is dirt cheap for reeled silk – it ends up being about $100/kilo after shipping.
They only sell it by the kilo, but in a wide range of colors. I’m planning to get it in white and dye it myself.
I’m going to order two kilos to start with, one of the 600 and one of the 1000, and if the quality is as good and consistent as the samples, I may see about organizing some sort of co-op, and consider splitting down to smaller lots. I know a kilo of silk is more than a lot of folks need.
They actually sell this as hand embroidery thread, on cards. When I first found that out, I thought it would be too expensive – but the per-kilo price is really quite reasonable.
I’d be up for a less than kilo amount, so if you do decide to go for it, please let me know.
I bought a card weaving loom last month and am finally getting to grips with it again. I have plans for both that *and* the 4-harness table loom right now. I’m sure I could use both the 600 and the 1000 denier 🙂
Silk — it’s my anti-drug 🙂
Just sketching in the sand, I could theoretically sell little bits to friends for something like $15-20 per 100g, which works out to about $5-6 an ounce. Cheaper than getting it most places, still.
