Moth Pr0N – Atlas at last!
A friend of mine gave me two Atlas cocoons this summer. I was beginning to wonder if they were ever going to hatch – and had stuck the aquarium at the back of a shelf, and had nearly forgotten about them.
But tonight, wow.
She’s SO BIG!!

That’s an Eri moth, for scale. It’s about a four inch wingspan. She’s got NINE INCHES.

OH MY!!!! She is utterly gorgeous. WOW! I had no idea there were moths this magnificent in size and patterning. Wow.
Re: Moth Pr0N – Atlas at last!
oh, she’s beautiful!
These are absolutely beautiful! Where did you learn about raising moths?
MOTHRA LIVES!
OMFG!! She’s huge, she’s gorgeous. Photographed against a white background, her wings look as if they have cut-outs in them. Very strange.
She is beautiful and elegant. Wow!
that is the biggest moth i’ve seen. very very beautiful. thank you for sharing with us!! 🙂
Holy moth! She’s beautiful.
Re: MOTHRA LIVES!
Those spots are translucent. In the shot where she’s sitting on my hand, you can see the finger through the upper left-side one. The polyphemus moths have the same see-thru ish stuff on some of their wing spots, but it’s not nearly as clear.
Through the internet, mostly. I started with Bombyx silkmoths in 2001, and have expanded from there to other silk-producing species. I was fascinated with moths and butterflies as a child, but never did rear them indoors, just watched the process outside.
Oh my god. That’s one beautiful moth.
Absolutely beautiful! I had no idea that they could be that lovely.
I think i like her body more than the wings!!!
she still looks very caterpillarish!
what do you do with them when they die?
-=wawa=-
absolutely GORGEOUS!!
INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL! I’m a wusssss aboot big insects I think it’s sooo lovely but I keep thinking BITE BITE BITE on the moth’s part! I’m sure they’re harmless though. wow wow wow.
If they’re in good shape, I keep them for display. Since this is a silk-making species, I may make a mounting of her to use for my presentations.
…so at what point will you unleash her to attack Tokyo?
These can’t be released here… now, if we were *in* Tokyo, it might be a different story. Or, actually, Taiwan.
Oh…dear…fighting between my aesthetic sense which says “How beeyoootiful!” and my reptilian sense which says “Ohmygod!!! Huge bug! Ahhhh!!!”
You’re a braver man than I am, Gunga Din! (can I call you when I have little critters in my bathroom that scare me? 😉 )
Absolutely gorgeous!
wonderful beauty 🙂

Wow!, thanks.

I stumbled across your journal and just had to say how beautiful these moths are. Amazing, really.
I’m glad I saw these, they’re truly wonderful.
They’re really an awe-inspiring sight. I highly recommend them. I think it’s the sheer scale – I’ve seen plenty of big silkmoths before, but a live Atlas was just a whole different level.
I hope you don’t mind me commenting here but I saw you and your love of silk weaving and wanted to comment.
I design clothing and I’m always looking for interesting people to converse with.
BTW..your moths are STUNNING…I love all creatures and your lovely darlings made me smile.
If you wish to add me I’d be thrilled!
Howdy!
I always enjoy conversations with creative folks.
Just FYI – my journal also has a lot of dream work; some of it is very weird or esoteric, and I always try to put it behind lj-cuts so that you don’t have to read it if you don’t want.
My journal has to do with a lot of creative work, dreams, ideas and just silly day to day stuff but I’m not as polite as you with putting my regular stuff behind a cut. Photos or 3D renders usually are.
I’ll probably happily read your dream work!

The Attacus Atlas moth is one of the most beautiful creatures in the world. I always had a fondness for them. Thanks for the pictures,
Kathy
