State Fair of Texas!
I’m going to be demonstrating silk reeling and talking about caterpillars and sericulture at the Texas Discovery Gardens at 11 AM each Sunday and Monday through the run of the Fair. The Fair runs from Friday, Sept. 29 through Sunday, October 22. If you get down there, definitely stop and say howdy! I’m there for 40 minutes or so each morning on those Sunday and Monday dates.
Ours here in MN is as big as yours – but DAMN we don’t have YOU reeling silk!! That would be fantastic…

This photo is actually my setup from the Texas Folk Life Festival; I don’t have any photos yet from the Fair. I’ll have to try to get some!
Last year, they had me outdoors in the butterfly gardens – it’s so sweet to have a migrating monarch stop for a sip on the flowers while you’re talking. This year, I’m going to be inside, but it should still be nice.

I didn’t think I had posted this photo before – could have, tho. It’s one that the Festival staff took, so I got it a long time after it was all over.
Unfortunately, I’m gluten intolerant. They have all kinds of fried tasty stuff – none of which I can have. I content myself with turkey legs, which I love.

I’ve never been to the State Fair of Texas…I have no excuse. I’ve lived here 22 years and it’s only 40 minutes away. Looks like we’ll have to check out the fair this year…

I know this is fairly well past when you made this post and it is not reeling but spinning,
Could I buy some 100% silk aran weight yarn from Estelle and spin it down to sock yarn? Or would it not work at all? If it wouldn’t work, where can I buy 100% sock yarn without killing my budget for the next year.
I don’t think that you can spin aran down to sock weight. Or, at least, it would be prohibitively tedious.
You can find 100% silk in a variety of weights at Habu Textiles, and Halcyon Yarns has several weights. The thing I’m not sure about, is whether it will make good socks. Silk doesn’t handle abrasion well, and tends to sag. Definitely want to swatch first! Most of the silk stockings I’ve seen historically, require garters to hold them in place.
Prohibitively tedious I can handle.
I’m not certain if the person in question would actually wear the socks or not. But the grey silk argyle socks have been a running joke for the past 15 years without ever existing in reality.
